Salkantay or Inca Trail? We help you choose your route to Machu Picchu

RG By Rosa Gutiérrez 2 min read

We compare Cusco’s two most famous treks: scenery, difficulty, permits, price and the arrival experience at Machu Picchu.

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • Salkantay needs no permits and is open all year.
  • The Inca Trail must be booked 4–6 months ahead and closes in February.
  • Both require 2 days of acclimatization in Cusco.
  • Alternative: Salkantay + Short Inca Trail.

It is the question we get most on WhatsApp. Both routes end at Machu Picchu, but the experience is very different. Here, based on our guides’ experience, is what each offers so you can choose with confidence.

Choose Salkantay if…

  • You want high-mountain scenery: Mount Salkantay, Humantay Lake and changing ecosystems down to the jungle.
  • You planned your trip only a few weeks ahead: no permits needed.
  • You travel in February, when the Inca Trail is closed.
  • You want a more affordable option without giving up a great journey.

Choose the Inca Trail if…

  • You love archaeology: Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca and Wiñay Wayna can only be reached on foot.
  • You dream of walking through Inti Punku and seeing Machu Picchu from above like the Incas.
  • You can book 4 to 6 months in advance.

Which one is harder?

Salkantay is higher and has a long pass day (about 22 km). The Inca Trail has more steps and a steep climb on day two. Either way, the key is acclimatizing two days in Cusco and training with 6–10 km hikes.

Guide’s tip: if you can’t get Inca Trail permits, combine Salkantay with the 2-day Short Inca Trail. You get glaciers and still arrive through the Sun Gate.

Our recommendation

There is no “best” route — there is a best route for you. For wild nature and flexibility, go Salkantay. If Inca history is your main motivation and you can plan ahead, the Inca Trail is unforgettable.

Frequently asked questions

01Which one is cheaper?

Salkantay is generally more affordable because it does not include an Inca Trail permit or mandatory porters.

02Can I do both?

Yes, with the 7-day Salkantay + Inca Trail combo or by adding the Short Inca Trail after Salkantay.
