All about Salkantay’s turquoise lake: location, altitude, hike duration, what to bring and whether to go on your own or with a tour.

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • Altitude: about 4,200 m.
  • 1.5–2 h hike up from Soraypampa.
  • Ideal to acclimatize before Salkantay.
  • Best light between 9:00 and 11:00 am.

Humantay Lake is a turquoise glacial lake at about 4,200 m at the foot of Mount Humantay, on the Salkantay route. It is one of the most popular day trips from Cusco and a great acclimatization test before a long trek.

How to get there

From Cusco it is about 3 hours by road to Mollepata and then to Soraypampa (3,900 m), where the hike starts. The easiest way is a tour including transport, breakfast, lunch and a guide.

How hard is the hike?

  • Distance: about 7 km round trip.
  • Ascent: 1.5 to 2 hours; descent: about 1 hour.
  • Elevation gain: roughly 300 m, but at high altitude.

It is not technical, but altitude makes it demanding. Horses can be rented from the community for part of the climb.

Best time and season

Arriving between 9:00 and 11:00 am gives the best light and clearer skies. April to October is dry; December to March brings frequent rain and clouds, though the landscape is very green.

What to bring

  • Layers, rain jacket, hat and gloves.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses.
  • Water, snacks and cash for the community fee.
Respect the place: the lake is sacred to local communities. Swimming and leaving trash are not allowed.

Frequently asked questions

01Can I go without a tour?

Yes, by public transport to Mollepata and a taxi to Soraypampa, but it takes longer and costs more separately.

02Can I swim in the lake?

No, it is forbidden out of respect for the communities and to protect the ecosystem.
